My Students
I teach multi-grade leveled students in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. Our school district is in an area that has distinct "haves and have-nots". Many families can provide the expensive tools requested for school.
Unfortunately, however, some families can NOT provide the expensive tools needed to be a successful 21st-century learner.
The Algebra 2 students that I work with especially, seem to have a higher percentage of struggling families. Because of this, these students are at a disadvantage. they are unable to use a tool that can make Algebra much more manageable.
My Project
The TI-84 Plus CE Teacher Pack will provide 10 more graphing calculators for students in my Algebra classes. The price of $150 puts this out of reach for some families, especially if they have more than one student in high school.
Graphing calculators allow students to transfer equations to graphs and back again.
An important element to mastering math is the ability to see patterns so that you can relate the rules when problem-solving. Graphs are simply a visual representation of these patterns.
Typically, students who are challenged with math need these visual representations. Graphing "by hand" can become cumbersome if you make computational errors as many students do. The accuracy of a graphing calculator eliminates some of these inaccuracies, thus providing scaffolds to the higher levels of problem-solving.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
