Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Special education can be challenging but extremely rewarding, especially if you teach in the Bronx. My students come from a predominately low-income area and come from single-family households. Ninety-nine percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches based on their socio-economic backgrounds and twenty-five percent of those students are special needs. My students face a multitude of problems in our neighborhood, such as a lack of proper funding for books and other essential needs, growing up in a high crime high poverty neighborhood, and a culture that doesn't put an emphasis on a strong education.

My students are highly energized and visual learners.

They love working on computers and using technology. In our school, we push our students to become job and college ready. Throughout the year, we explore how to write resumes, balance checkbooks, plan a dinner party, use Microsoft Office, use Google Drive, and design a house/room/zoo. This way, my students are ready for the real world at a young age.

My Project

We desperately need graph paper to help my students solve math problems. In sixth and seventh grade math, my students are expected to use graphing paper to create area models, scale drawings and create graphs. We started the year using regular graph paper. By the next day, the majority of my students had ripped or missing work. This not only gave my students unnecessary anxiety; they were also upset since they were proud of the work they made, but lost it. Most of my students have difficulties with organization due to their disability. They are constantly losing their work. They are extremely unorganized and struggle to keep their work nice and neat. To keep them organized, my students need notebooks with graph paper so that they can keep all of their math work in one place. They need graph notebooks to create scale models and graphs in math class. These notebooks will be a life saver.
