In Algebra 1 we explore the graphs of linear and quadratic functions. Rulers and graphing whiteboards are helpful in creating an environment of active learning. I typically provide graph paper, but these materials offer a more interactive platform for collaborative problem-solving and exploration. With the larger magnetic graph, I will be able to demonstrate how to graph and analyze graphs more clearly. I am also hoping that students can use it to explain their thinking when reviewing answers, making connections, or analyzing graphs.
With the ability to sketch, annotate, and visualize graphs with these materials, students will be able to be more engaged with mathematical content.
These materials will make it easier to experiment with different representations and develop a deeper understanding of functions, equations, and the basics of graphing. Many of my students enjoy visual representations when practicing concepts. Using a whiteboard when graphing makes it easier for them to fix mistakes as they are learning new concepts. My students like working with whiteboards as they don't feel as worried about making mistakes and fixing them on a whiteboard compared to mistakes on paper. It is crucial for me to find ways to encourage students to try problems without fear of mistakes as this is such an important part of active learning and forming critical thinking skills!
