My Students

Have you gotten to the point where you feel as if you can't keep up with today's technology? As a child of the 70s, I have, simply because of my age. My teenage students, however, can't keep up because they don't have access to the technology they will need in college and beyond.

If you were to take a peek into my classroom, you would see young people representing countries such as Bangladesh, El Salvador, Guatemala, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and the United States.

They speak a myriad of languages and work hard every day in order to be academically successful, go to college, and make their families proud as our nation's future engineers, teachers, doctors, and scientists. Unfortunately, nearly 80% of my students come from families with incomes that qualify them for federal assistance. Some live in one-bedroom apartments with a family of five. Others work all weekend to help their parents pay the rent. Still others are in foster care. They access computers at school and the Internet at the library as many do not have access at home. Yet, in order to remain competitive in college and in the workforce, they are expected to be fluent in the most up-to-date technology.

My Project

We utilize the CPM (College Preparatory Mathematics) curriculum, an interactive, hands-on, and problem-solving based program that emphasizes deep conceptual understanding over rote memorization. We investigate complicated functions, create intricate graphs and diagrams, write and solve equations, and write deep and thorough analyses of problems, all of which is applied to real-life scenarios like comparing investment accounts or determining the impact of a contagious disease that spreads at an exponential rate. Our curriculum is dependent upon the availability and use of sophisticated graphing calculators that can do computations easily and quickly and create diagrams and graphs that help the scenarios come alive visually, leaving time and energy for the truly important work of critical analysis, thoughtful evaluation, and creative problem-solving. My students need 3 graphing calculators in order to solve advanced mathematics problems and complete their coursework.

Innovation.

Access. Academic success. College acceptance. Career preparation. Your donation will help my students achieve these things and more. Each graphing calculator costs approximately $130 but to my students, that calculator and the access to the American Dream that it represents is priceless.
