Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students deserve the very BEST. I teach 11th grade Precalculus by using a curriculum that relies heavily on the graphing calculator. This allows students to quickly model problems and look for patterns and connections that are limited if graphing by hand.
We use an integrated curriculum that makes multiple connections between the graph, the algebra, and the context of the problem.
My students have been under-served since the beginning of their schooling. My students come from low-income homes, many with only one or no parents. They are born with little social capital and are often underestimated by our society. My students work hard - given the chance, I know they will make a POSITIVE DIFFERENCE in our world.
My Project
Currently, a graphing calculator is essential for success in Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus. In fact, it is actually a requirement to take the AP Calculus exam for college credit. With these calculators costing more than $100, very few of my students have enough money to pay for one of these invaluable tools. In a higher income area, this cost is nothing; to my students, it is simply unattainable, a perfect example of how socio-economic status can limit academic success.
This technology goes BEYOND the everyday calculator, and can be used to enhance understanding, rather than replace student thought. Many argue that calculators should not be necessary, but used properly, graphing calculators can be incredible tools for instruction, helping students to make connections and develop deeper mathematical understanding. With many software applications preloaded on the calculator, these incredible learning tools can really help students to visualize difficult, abstract concepts.
To make deeper mathematical connections and visualize difficult concepts, we need TI-84+ graphing calculators.
These calculators are engaging tools that really MOTIVATE and ENHANCE learning in mathematics. Every student I have seen is engaged by this technology and most have those âÂÂAHAâ moments that are so wonderful to have in a classroom. Without this technology those connections between the algebra, the table, and the graph are limited or never made.
