My Students
I teach PreK-12th grade art in a small rural school district. About 40% of the students qualify for free/reduced-priced lunch. Art classes in our district are designed to introduce a wide variety of media and let students make choices to work like real artists. I want them to have opportunities to explore media and find something they really connect with.
We are a rural school district where everyone really does seem to know everyone!
The students and staff give the school a very positive atmosphere. It really feels like a family! Everyone is welcoming and genuinely cares about each other, which makes teaching the students that much more enjoyable.
My Project
The art classes in our district are part of the Career and Technical Education pathways. I want to help my students connect modern graphic design to more traditional art forms. With a cricut in the classroom, students would be able to use software to design stencils they could apply to pottery in order to transfer their designs using vinyl and underglaze. In addition to its use in the realm of ceramics, I also envision the machine being used by Graphic Design students to make t-shirts so they can wear their artwork and by Computer Graphics students to design and cut out logos and other work and apply to “merchandise” so they can see all the applications that could be used by a business.
