My Students

Have you ever met fifth and sixth graders? On the verge of becoming their own people, they are full of curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm.

As one of the top-performing charter schools in the state, our school is working daily to help our students achieve their full potential.

The students in my year-round urban charter school are 95% low income. They attend school from 8 am to 5 pm daily. The staff at our charter school works diligently within our rigorous curriculum to help education come alive!

My students struggle with issues that often fall outside the scope of understanding. From poverty to food insecurity, homelessness to incarcerated parents, they face head-on many challenges that would make adults crumble. Even with these challenges, they come to school each day trying to put their best foot forward and grow as students, in academics, and as leaders.

My Project

Students who are reading below grade level often struggle to find texts that are both appropriate for them and interesting. The pandemic has impacted my students in very real ways- many of them lack stamina, interest, and desire to read.

By filling my classroom with high interest graphic novel series, I am giving my students the tools they need to develop as readers.

It's important that every student has access to books that help him or her grow as a reader, and I want to see each of my students succeed! Readers are leaders, and these books will help readers grow in my classroom.
