This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 6th graders who live in The Bronx. The majority of our students are Title I students: they receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students are advanced and former English language learners. They will be entering sixth grade in September and will be beginning a new chapter in their lives.
One of the challenges that my students encounter is finding engaging books at their reading level.
When my students enter my classroom in the next month, many of them will be coming into sixth grade never having read a novel. My goal this year is to change this unfortunate fact. In order for them to dramatically increase their reading level, they need to read interesting books that are at their reading level. Last year, I was getting a lot of requests for graphic novels. Specifically, students were asking for books by Raina Telgemeier like Smile, Ghost, and Guts. These were books that were getting passed around and students were requesting that I get more. Students also showed a huge interest in a graphic novel called American Born Chinese. I did make some purchases last year, but this year I would like to flood my library with graphic novels.
My Project
Students will use these graphic novels as their independent reading books. Students will be allowed to take these novels home to read during their free time. This practice is to help students understand that reading is not just for school, it's for enjoyment. When students have completed a novel, they will create a project, like a book report, showing that they have read this novel. This activity can lead to students becoming forever readers.
I would like my students to present their projects every two to three weeks to create buzz around their books.
Once one student falls in love with a book, it's not long before more follow.
