Graphic Novels to Engage Reluctant Readers

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

BAM!! POW!! CRASH!!! Graphic Novels are an action-packed way for students to dive head-first into reading and become fully absorbed in an engaging text.

My students attend an inner-city school in Nebraska.

We are a Title I school with over 50 percent of the students receiving free or reduced rate lunch. Around half of the students speak a language other than English at home: either Spanish, Somali, Arabic, or a variety of others. Despite their lack of resources, these students love learning and want to be engaged learners. They are so interested in reading graphic novels and when they get the chance, it's hard to get them to stop reading! These students are some of the most caring I've come by: respectfully holding doors and consistently using good manners. Our school works diligently to promote high standards for character and our students respond well.

My Project

Our classroom needs colorful, engaging graphic novels at various reading levels for students to enjoy- the school library has several graphic novels- but nearly every student in the entire school of 500 wants to check them out- making the books hard to come by. We would appreciate graphic novel sets for guided reading and individual books for independent reading as well.

Please help by donating to our project.

You will be holding the door for my students- welcoming them into the world of engaged reading. They would hold the door for you! Thank you for considering our project!
