Graphic Novels to Build Stronger Readers!

My students need copies of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde graphic novels for our final unit of their 8th grade year. They have just finished reading a graphic novel for Tom Sawyer and absolutely loved it!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students all come from low-income communities whose families have chosen to send them to a charter school that is providing them an education that will prepare them for high school, college, leadership, and life. All of them are students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and have managed to work their way onto the Honor Roll amidst barriers in their educations.

For many of them, their educational experience has largely been negative due to their difficulty in learning the material, however many of them have begun to accept their disability and use it as fuel to become a better student.

My Project

Struggling readers can oftentimes shy away from reading classics and engaging with books and the characters. However, my students are different. Once I introduced graphic novels into our curriculum to make classics and reading more accessible, I saw an increase in engagement and understanding.

Graphic novels did not reduce the rigor, but instead enhanced it and made many of the concepts I am teaching visual and accessible.

Literary terms suddenly clicked in their minds, characters took on a shape and form, and our readings became livelier and exciting. I want to continue on this high note with our last novel of the year, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde.

My goal is to have my students read and preview as many high school texts as I can so that they enter high school with confidence!
