Graphic Novels on Mental Health, Balls & Games

Help me give my students books on mental health, and self-confidence and sensory stress-relieving balls.

My Project

Our library is a vibrant and comforting space that welcomes students who are having a tough day. We are eager to build our collection with books about self-esteem and overcoming obstacles, such as The Questioneers series, which features children from all backgrounds.

We're also excited to add graphic novels to our collections about children with anxiety.

I'm also looking forward to creating a sensory and play station in the library where kids can focus their energy on shooting hoops, or squeezing stress balls. I believe these physical outlets will make it easier for them to focus on reading. Kids need a place to be kids, even in a library.

As the librarian of this New York City school, I'm also a writer specializing in anxiety and mental health, and have written an article for School Library Journal reviewing most of the books on my list.

As my article states, graphic novels and visual-heavy narratives are often the best vehicles for exploring mental health in children's and YA books.

My students bring a wide variety of experiences and traumas with them. They include refugees and unhoused children. They speak more than 40 languages and bring an abundance of cultural richness that I am pleased to say is reflected in the book collection I chose.
