This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Let me tell you about the students at our school. They are motivated students. Although they come from low income families, they continue to shine and push through many challenges. Our school is limited in resources and space, yet these kids have demonstrated great growth and are accomplishing many goals.

All the teachers at our school have very high expectations for all our students no matter their background.

We want all our students to have the same opportunities that many other students in urban settings have in regards to resources. These kids are amazing and deserve nothing but the best!

My Project

I am working in collaboration with the middle school Language Arts/Writing Teacher in our school. We work together with general education students and diverse learners in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. Regardless of their reading levels they all enjoy graphic novels.

Every teacher loves to see their students' reading independently, right?

We do! But in order to continue motivating our students we need graphic novels that not only tell a story but also help students learn and make connections. Many struggling readers grow to dislike reading because the older you are the less engaging a book with no illustrations can seem. The graphic novels provide students with a sense of comfort to settle in and be captivated. They provide an opportunity for our struggling readers to read books at grade level.

Following are some of the graphic novels that we are requesting:

These books along will be included in the classroom's library where students are able to check out books independently. These books are read in class for 20 minutes every day and also for homework. These books help keep students engaged and motivated to read!
