Graphic Novels in the Classroom

My students need five Max Axiom graphic novels in sets of 15 copies each and 5 copies of Wonderful Life with the Elements that cover 6th grade NGSS science standards.

My Students

A typical day in my class involves doing a variety of activities. I try to include a reading activity, a lab/hands-on activity and a collaborative activity. I believe that allowing them to move is important for their growing bodies, and collaborating with classmates is most like the real world.

We have a very diverse student body.

It is 43.2% Caucasian, 43.5% African American, 8.5% Hispanic, 3.3% Asian, and 1.4% other. Socio-economically, a huge majority are in poverty (our school is ~85% GAP). Many of my students score in the bottom percentile in reading, which is why I want to build an in-class library of graphic novels focusing on NGSS science standards.

My Project

I will use graphic novels to supplement the district-provided materials already in use. Standard textbooks can be intimidating and difficult for students who are in the 6th grade but read on a 2nd or 3rd grade level. Graphic novels will give them access to the concepts being taught on a level that is more reachable at this time.

I personally bought a small set of Max Axiom graphic novels to test their impact on test scores.

From pre-assessment to assessment (with graphic novels), I was able to move 33% of my lowest kids into a higher category on a state standardized test. Without graphic novels, I was only able to move 1.3% of my lowest scoring kids up. They clearly have a huge impact on struggling readers, and I am excited by the possibility of being able to use them all school year long, not just for one lesson.
