Our library is a warm and vibrant hub in Harlem, New York. Murals outside the school celebrate the accomplishments of renowned authors such as Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, and the school's namesake orator and leader, Sojourner Truth, a fierce advocate for literacy. At our school, we want the library to be a haven, an inspiration, and a launchpad for academic excellence. Unfortunately, many of our children have been hard hit by the pandemic and have lacked opportunities to strengthen their endurance and focus to read long texts. Graphic novels to the rescue! When you open a favorite comic series like Black Panther Marvel or the Babysitter's Club, the vocabulary is quite advanced and the emotionally resonant, action-packed pages hold students' interest. I love seeing my students fall in love with books!
When my students pick up their favorite graphic novel series, their eyes light up and their hunger for comics is insatiable.
My students love the Black Panther Marvels series, Veronica Agarwaal's Southeast Asian families, and the Babysitter's Club diverse range of characters. These characters resonate with our young readers and they can't get enough of these books. Please help us turn around our low test scores and give students the skills they need to succeed. As students build confidence and discover the joy of reading through comics, they can move on to more and more varied texts and see themselves as readers and scholars!
