My Students
Our school is one of a few in the nation pioneering High School Academies. Due to the highly diverse school population, students bring various learning experiences, background knowledge, and cultural views to the classroom.
Not only does my High School house a large English Language Learner (ELL) program, but we also have an Early Childhood Center for teen parents.
Most of my ELLs have experienced trauma most people cannot even fathom. They arrive to this country with so many unique skills and strengths!
My Project
National Geographic Learning published a set of classical novels in the form of graphic novels designed specifically for high school, English Language Learners. It is rare to find books like this that are highly engaging and accessible for teenagers!
This teaching toolkit includes a classroom set of twelve graphic novels (Romeo & Juliet, Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.), a teacher's manual for each book, and a practice workbook for students.
Compared to the basic package, this entire toolkit allows the teacher to engage students with deeper level thinking with the novels. Many of the classic stories that most ELLs would miss out on, are now available in an easy-to-read format!
More than half of students from low‑income households
