The best way to teach creative writing is to have students read mentor texts. It's also important for students to read texts where they can see themselves in the characters. This applies to the characters in the stories and the authors who created them. My students read texts by a diverse groups of authors and poets. I would like to ensure that they have the opportunity to read graphic novel mentor texts that reflect them and the world around them.
Comic books are much more than super heroes, vigilantes, and villains; they are a mirror of our society.
The majority of my comic book and graphic novel library is made up of classic superhero texts like "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, " and "V for Vendetta." While these are excellent books, my graphic novel library remains stuck in the 1980s and '90s. I would like to update my titles to better reflect my students' interests and the times we're living in. They should see the wide range of characters and storylines that comics writers and artists create. They should read books written in the 21st century.
My students should be able to read and create storylines and graphics that reflect their experiences. They need to read texts that can demonstrate ways to construct the stories of their lives. The best way to accomplish this classroom library refresh is with your help.
