My Students

As a librarian, I am so lucky to have many, many children at my school who truly love to read. But while I celebrate my bookworms, I can't neglect my reluctant readers-the students who have trouble motivating themselves to pick up a book. Graphic novels are a great tool to reach reluctant reader

I work in a public elementary school in Washington, DC.

My students come from diverse backgrounds, and they're even more diverse in their habits and preferences. Our library serves nearly 300 children but does not have a dedicated budget from the school or from the district. I must raise the funds for any books that I add to our collection, and that isn't always easy. While the graphic novel section in our library is very small, it is one of the most popular sections. I have not been able to add a large number of books to this collection, but it is desperately needed-most days there are very few books left on the shelves because they are all checked out. I regularly have to tell students that I just don't have the books they're looking for.

My Project

Graphic novels these days are sophisticated, and they are a great way to engage kids who are intimidated by large blocks of text. The vibrant pictures will draw their attention while the text will help them move their reading to the next level. The novels I'm requesting span a wide range of reading levels, so they will be enjoyed by my proficient and struggling readers alike.

I firmly believe that reluctant readers are enthusiastic readers who haven't found the right book yet.

This project will nearly double the size of the graphic novel section in my library, and that will give me the tools I need to help those reluctant readers find their right book.
