My Students

I have the heavy task of moving my kids two grades in one year. While this is a task I can accomplish, I need high quality resources to help me get there. We don't have a school library, so I stock my classroom library with the best resources I can find.

My students are the definition of high needs.

In our school, 25% of our students are homeless and 80% receive free/reduced lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have grown up in the same traditionally African-American neighborhood as their grandparents, and haven't ventured much further than our city limits. Others are first or second generation, Spanish speaking, immigrants to our country. With our wide cultural range, we spend much of our time learning about each other and the characters we read in our texts. There's so much to share and learn just among ourselves.

My Project

This set of books is a good mix between nonfiction and fiction. I've found that students eat up a good nonfiction graphic novel. They don't even realize how much they are learning along the way. Without noticing, I've got a bunch of history experts on my hands in no time!

It only takes one book for a child to fall in love with reading.

My goal is for each and every student to make a personal connection with a text this year. My kids are visual learners and take to graphic novels immediately. Graphic novels allow students to fall in love with history, beautiful art, and a great story all in one!
