My Project
For the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching a high school Multicultural Literature elective, a course built around empathy, identity, and student voice. Through YA novels like Don't Ask Me Where I'm From and American Street, we explore critical topics such as immigration, race, and resilience. This year, my goal is to add a graphic novel book club unit, where students will choose from a selection of multicultural graphic novels and create presentations and projects that connect their book to larger cultural and literary themes.
Graphic novels are a powerful and accessible form of storytelling.
They allow students to engage with complex topics such as migration, racism, assimilation, trauma, and resistance,, but use both words and visuals. For many of my students, especially visual learners, English Language Learners, or reluctant readers, these books offer a new way into literature and personal reflection.
Your support will help me provide a classroom set of graphic novels that reflect the rich diversity of our world and our student body. These stories will not only enhance our curriculum, but also help students see themselves more clearly. With your help, we’ll build a more inclusive, creative, and inspiring reading experience.
