My Students
I’ve been blessed with a teaching career surrounded by middle school students. Their energy and puppy-like awkwardness make for an exciting and interesting day that is always different from the next. In a sixth through eighth-grade middle school, my seventh-grade students are at a unique point in their academic careers. They have a year of experience, yet another year still full of wonder, giving them the perfect mixture of confidence and curiosity.
As a seventh grade ELA teacher, my classroom is the melting pot of readers and writers.
My students come from different learning backgrounds and have many unique learning styles; However, they are all seeking adventure and looking to escape the ordinary day-to-day. My students are on the hunt for awesome ideas, friends, role models, and inspiration to make life and school fascinating.
My Project
Our classroom library is the heart of our reading community. It inspires readers to build a reading curiosity as well as reading momentum. After doing research on the positive effects of independent reading and student choice, I've been working hard to keep our classroom library full of diverse reading experiences. While we have many fiction chapter books, I'm starting to pay attention to what my students are in need of, or of books that are extremely different from what we already have.
Our classroom library is in need of graphic novels as a tool to build reading endurance.
Over the school year I noticed a handful of students who loved graphic novels and gravitated toward the same ones over and over again. Research has shown how graphic novels are just as important as written novels in building comprehension and inferencing skills. So to continue building reading joy for all learners and interests, I am in need of graphic novels that are at a higher reading level and have more mature topics.
