Graphic Novels for 7th Graders!

My students need more reading materials. Our campus is limited to our classroom library. My library has 900 books for 110 students. It's up to me to keep books coming in.

My Students

It just takes one book to get kids to fall in love with reading. My project is simple. I found the best graphic novels for Young Adult readers and asked for those books. English Language Learners and students with reading complications LOVE graphic novels.

My students are the definition of high needs.

In our school, 25% of our students are homeless and 80% receive free/reduced lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have grown up in the same traditionally African-American neighborhood as their grandparents, and haven't ventured much further than our city limits. Others are first or second generation, Spanish speaking, immigrants to our country. With our wide cultural range, we spend much of our time learning about each other and the characters we read in our texts. There's so much to share and learn just among ourselves.

My Project

As a literacy teacher, my biggest struggle is getting students to simply pick out a book. There's always a litany of excuses why certain books won't work. By having some of the newest and most exciting Young Adult graphic novels, my students will be bookworms in no time. Reading doesn't have to be boring and students shouldn't read what they aren't interested in. I plan to keep the library stocked with enticing reads that they can't wait to get their hands on!

It only takes one book for a child to fall in love with reading.

Upon falling in love with books, my students will grow to be lifelong readers. Graphic novels help even the most reluctant and troubled reader form a bond with reading.
