Graphic Novels: a Key to Unlocking a Love of Reading
Help me give my students books that will develop a joy of reading. Many of today's young readers gravitate towards graphic novels. Help me expand my classroom library to include graphic novels for all readers!

My Students
Hi! I am a special education teacher. I work with fourth-grade students that require individualized learning styles. The district I work in has many transient families meaning for some students, academics are not the first priority, as shelter and food are a daily concern. I work with some students that are on the spectrum and others with specific learning disabilities. Most are behind grade level. My job is to provide them the support, strategies, and differentiated instruction that they need to succeed.
My Project
Graphic novels are so much more than just comic books. This genre allows students to read above their independent reading level. It challenges comprehension and relies on inferencing to make meaning while reading.
Students that struggle with reading, can be motivated by graphic novels as they are more apt to experience success in decoding and comprehension.
The feeling of academic success is a boost to all learners; however, to struggling readers, this can be the boost that gives them confidence and helps them realize that they too are successful readers.
I have carefully selected graphic novels that, students of varying reading levels, can read independently. The Toon series that I am graciously requesting, is a comic genre that provides students with a variety of ways to decode text. Students are able to read text cues, gestures, and facial expressions to aid them in making sense of unfamiliar words.
Please help me to surround my students with positive reading experiences. Graphic novels allow readers to read above their independent level and allow them to expand their comprehension while building confidence. By stocking my classroom library with graphic novels, you will give many struggling readers opportunities for reading success. Successful readers are successful students!
