My students need great graphic novels that provide interesting stories with colorful and detailed illustrations such as TOON Graphics. My students also need to read classic novels such as books of John Steinbeck and Harper Lee.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners with autism. They are enrolled at a school in the Bronx, and they get 12 months instruction. Most of my students do not get much support in a home setting since their parents do not speak English and their economic situations do not allow them to provide healthy meals and help with their homework. Most of them do not have access to the Internet, so they depend on the public library to use the computer to complete some of their assignments.

My Project

In our school, there are 28 English Language Learners (ELLs) with autism in middle school unit and they do not have graphic novels which will motivate them to read. My students love to look at details of the illustrations in the books and it helps them tremendously to retain the information of the story. The set of the great graphic novels will help them to improve their reading comprehension skills and writing skills. They also need to get exposed to the classic novels, by John Steinbeck and Harper Lee, so they can get ready for high school curriculum. They need a lot of support since they do not get much support at home.
