Graphic Design: Images Making an Impact with Teens
My students need the art supplies to produce graphic designs. Students will make posters, prints, collages, and other artworks to express their reactions to our world.
Everywhere we turn, we see images that influence us. Graphic design influences every aspect of our world. Students need the skills to understand these images and create their own influential designs.
My awesome students travel from all over the city to come to our academic magnet school.
They are racially diverse. Seventy-five percent of my students live below the poverty level. My students are very smart and have bright futures. They hold so much promise. 100% of our seniors graduated last year! Over 90% go on to college. My heart swells with pride when I write this because these kids believe their education is a way to make it in the world.
My Project
Our world is overwhelmingly visual. Students today are tech savvy, yet do they really understand the plethora of images that bombard them each day? I intend to use these supplies to teach students about graphic design. We will engage in art lessons which teach how to compose images to influence viewers. Students will look at images from history that have had historical impact. We will also examine current images that surround us. Students will use watercolor pencils, watercolors, printmaking and collage to create their designs. Students will make graphic designs that react to the world in which the students live. These images will be displayed around school, and others in the school community will be impacted too.
I always worked very hard to bring the world of art and art experience to my students. At my school, my students are so bright and engaged. I need to provide the best art education possible for them. Please help me provide these materials.
'Visual literacy' is something rarely hear about outside art teacher meetings.
However, by teaching my students about graphic design and exposing them to influential images, current and historical, my students will become visually literate, educated viewers and image creators. Their skill to make images will improve and they will be better able to influence the viewers of their artwork. Artistic skill is empowering. Please help me build the graphic design skills of my students.
