Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day we start off the class in our meeting area known as the conference center. Here the students are able to share anything that they've done the previous day or something that they are looking forward to doing later on in the afternoon as well as readings, projects, and writing pieces.
My students come from all different cultural backgrounds; Asian, Arabic and Hispanic.
They are English Language Learners who are overcoming tremendous amounts of hurdles and making extraordinary progress. They are bright, warm, personable, and quite lively. They enjoy coming to school and learning the English language through hands on projects in Science and Social Studies.
Our school has created an atmosphere that is "family" like. From the moment students enter the school building there is a sense of safety and belonging.
In my class I truly believe in building relationships; teacher to student, teacher to parents, and student to student. These relationships foster an environment of trust and risk-taking. In order for students, especially English Language Learners to make progress and be successful in their academics there must be an opened and welcoming environment.
My Project
In the process of second language acquisition students may obtain a second language through various forms. To fine-tune that language acquisition, the use of the 'Daily Language' books will come into play. These books will be used on a daily basis to focus on the grammar and mechanics of the English language. The 'Sight Word Journal' will be extremely useful for my Kindergarten students. This journal will provide them with the most commonly used words they need to get them reading and writing.
When it comes to learning, I am an advocate for hands-on activities and projects. These activities work best in the content areas such as science and social studies. Science is a subject that involves more than just reading. The use of the 'Science Specimens Centers' will promote hands on learning activities for all my English Language Learners in an enthusiastic manner that will promote the students knowledge of the content while at the same time promoting academic language in English.
Understanding the high demands that society as well as academia has for individuals who speak grammatically correct as well as those who have a diverse vocabulary, is a driving force for me.
These resources will be beneficial to the students growth and mastery of the English language which will in turn promote confident and academically skilled students. These skills will go beyond their present state and will make them better prepared citizens to contribute to society.
