My Students
Do you remember the first time reading Shel Silverstein? I do. It was back when I was in the 4th grade. The words and pictures were fun to read which brought smiles and laughs. It is my hope that with the study of poetry that smiles and laughs can be shared with each student's anthology of poems.
Our 4th graders come from a racially diverse background that include mainstream, learning disabled, and physically impaired students.
We are a public neighborhood school that consists of varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Even though they are eager to learn, about half of our students have little to no parental support regarding their education.
My Project
April has always been poetry month so last year to celebrate we put on our first ever Poetry Cafe and we are hoping to make this an annual event. During the month of April, I expose students to all types of poetry and then ask them to write various types of their own poems such as cinquains, haikus, diamontes, etc. Once their collection is complete, they are able to draw and illustrate their pieces which we would be able to bind for them and provide them with a "published" anthology that they will use for presentation during our Poetry Cafe. This will provide each student with a nicely finished piece of work that they can be proud of for years to come. Students will learn how to incorporate thoughts and feelings into other modes of writing such as poetry. They will also learn what it means to have a final piece "published" for others to read and enjoy.
Donations to this request will make a difference because when we are all done with the written pieces and illustrations, each student can have his/her own anthology bound as a keepsake of the 4th grade.
The other supplies we have asked for will help the students to create the best poetry anthology possible. Without the binding machine and other art supplies, the students will be limited in their ability to create a nicely finished piece.
