Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are low income minority groups (african american and immigrants/immigrant descendants). Many of them feel they will never be able to attend a post secondary institution. I prepare them with employability skills through my "On the Job Training Program" and "Career and Technical Education Internship". At the moment, we are working on getting the ServSafe Industry Certification as many of them work in the restaurant business. I use Knowledge Matters Programs; at the moment we are working on Personal Finance and Restaurant. During the 2nd semester we will work on Accounting, Entrepreneurship, and Management. I am a career change with experience in the field of Accounting, Human Resources, and Management. I bring my experience from my years in the business world to help them write resumes, resume cover letters, and thank you letters that will help them get noticed. I also teach them how to conduct good interviews, and I establish partnerships in the community to help them find employment. I am a minority (Puerto Rican born in NY), I was a single mother for 8 years and finished my Bachelor's degree while working full time as a single mother. I use this as an example to inspire them.

My Project

For students the day of their High School Graduation is forever embedded in their memories. For many of our students this achievement has been a war that they have been waging for many years. Some come to school hungry and sleepy. The students at MJSHS that usually do not pursue a higher education are those that have limited resources to higher education and those who have to work a full time job to help support their families. Many of our 12th grade students have taken the role of parents during the pandemic as parents have kept younger siblings at home and they have to go out and work. Most of the student in my On-the-Job Training Program cannot afford to work part-time and are working full-time jobs, some even work graveyard shifts because they pay more and are better able to help the finances of the home. I have a particular student whom is loosing her entire immediate family as they are being deported. She will stay behind in the US and will stay with other relatives. So I am asking for your support to make this day extra special for them. They truly deserve it. I thank you in advance for your support in helping us recognize they have won the war and they are Graduating!!!
