This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students were placed at this brand new school after already completing two years of high school at their school of choice. This transition has taken many students out of their "comfort zone" and has required that they make new friends and teachers.
My students are very respectful and kind.
They come from families that are hard-working and often are not home to supervise homework. As a result, the students need to be self-motivated to get good grades. I would like to reward those who try hard to pass my class. I plan on awarding an IPOD to one student in each of my history classes. The award will be given to a student who has displayed tremendous resiliency in accomplishing assignments, despite their home life. Our school has a gang problem, and I would like to reward students who are doing the right thing.
My Project
Students will learn that adults recognize when they are trying hard. They will see the connection between studying and earning decent grades. The students that I choose to receive the IPOD, will be from a lower socio-economic group, and will not already have one. One IPOD will be given to each of my 3 U.S. History classes, and one Geography class.
Students will have the opportunity to earn the IPODS by completing their homework. Students who have completed all homework assignments during the last quarter of the semester, will be given a raffle ticket to enter into a drawing for the IPOD. There will be one raffle per class period. I expect that my completion rate for homework assignments will increase during this period.
I chose the IPOD because they are a resource that the students can use in and out of the classroom. In addition to using it for their own personal use, they can download podcasts, Spark Notes, Study guides, Google and various other educational applications.
This project will be an incentive for those students who work hard.
My low-income students do not have IPODS, and some do not even have a cell phone. By having this project funded, I will be able to provide a reward that will be valued and appreciated.
