This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are international, English language learners from over 30 different countries. All of the students have been in the US four years of fewer. This year our students were expecting a traditional graduation ceremony that they could experience with their friends and family just like every other high school student in the world. Many of the students will be the first person in their families to graduate from a high school in the United States.
Today, students are experiencing challenges continuing their education due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Students are learning remotely from their homes in a large city that has been devastated by the virus. They use computers and tablets provided by the school district. Students access education via video applications and self-guided study. This presents difficulties when some students are children of essential workers or are essential workers themselves. All students are helping their families with childcare, cooking, and household responsibilities.
The students have been putting forth their best efforts to access online learning in pursuit of their graduation goals. Unfortunately, despite their consistent dedication this situation includes multiple challenges including technology troubleshooting, the lack of an in-person learning community, and the connection between teachers and students.
My Project
With these supplies we will be providing our students with a tangible, authentic art experience that they can participate in from their homes. Students will receive journals and arts supplies that they can use to design and create original graduation cap decorations that represent their identities, hopes, and accomplishments as learners.
While our graduation celebration will be held virtually, having artwork created by each individual will allow students to connect through a shared experience that celebrates their achievements and dreams.
Students will both commemorate their work throughout high school and also participate in an arts project.
