My Students

Do you remember the classic comic strips in Sunday's newspaper? Do you know that comics and graphic novels are some of the best tools to help students practice inferencing skills? My students need exposure to graphic novels so they can ENJOY making inferences!

My mission is to get students to love reading.

I believe that reading can be a powerful escape for my students. For some, it may to the easiest way to escape the violence in their neighborhood and the disappointments of poverty. I can feel my students' thirst for engagement. They want to be connected to engaging books that takes them to new places. I am also confident that every student wants to read at grade level. Struggling readers have slipped through the cracks long enough. By 9th grade, my students have developed their identities as readers. "Reading is boring." "I suck at reading." "I don't get it." My students face these feelings every day. Therefore, it is my job to build a community of readers who recognize that they CAN be successful readers. They CAN find books that speak to them. They CAN bridge the gap with their peers and read just like everyone else!

My Project

When I introduced the first graphic novel, our class came alive! "You mean, we get to actually read these, Ms. H?" "Can I take his home to show my mom?" Students were shocked that they could check out one of our 2 graphic novels during independent reading time. They loved these 2 novels so much that I had to create a "sign-up sheet!" Graphic novels are absolutely perfect for my students. The pictures require kids to use sequencing skills and make several inferences as they read. Therefore, students are fine-tuning a reading skill they will utilize for years to come WHILE they laugh out loud and actually enjoy reading!

I wish I could capture the look on my students' faces when they hear that a stranger is kind enough to make a donation.

It takes a moment to register, but I promise you that our room fills with gratitude and sheer excitement. Your donation not only encourages my students to love reading, it pushes them to show the same kindness towards others.
