My students need 1 Economy Rhythm Band Set, 2 Diatonic Alto Glockenspiel with Mallets, 4 Boomwhackers Tuned Percussion Tubes and 2 Octavator Caps 8-Pack.
Taking turns on instruments is fun, but playing together as an ensemble is even better! I hope that I can teach my students to listen to one another while they perform so they can create a unified sound as a whole group.
Our school is an all-girls public school in a large city, and we are surrounded by many musical cultures.
My students want to imitate the different kinds of music that they hear, so they are eager to get their hands on any instrument they can play. Since many of their parents cannot afford these materials, my music class is one of the few places they can participate in hands-on instrumental music.
My Project
I will teach my students about playing the beat, accompanying music with rhythmic patterns, and improvisation. I will also emphasize proper playing technique, since many of these percussion instruments require very specific hand position. They will develop fine motor skills to hold and play the small instruments. They will also begin to classify instruments by material and sound: wooden instruments that click, metal instruments that ring or jingle, and skin instruments that boom. We will do beginning ear-training and pitch-matching activities with the glockenspiels and the Boomwhackers. Overall, there will be many more opportunities to learn about rhythms and percussion in world music if we have this collection available to us.
Having these percussion instruments in my music class will allow everyone to play as an ensemble.
They will develop listening skills as they play in unison and hold their own rhythm when we play in multiple parts. They will have a blast playing different notes on the Boomwhackers! The girls will love to talk about the many different sounds they can make, and it will get them excited to attend music.
