Grab a Graphic: Novel That Is!

My students need graphic novels in our media center to get them excited about reading books within their reading levels.

My Students

"What's a good book?" "Do you have anything I'd like?" These are questions I often hear from students who are reluctantly searching for a book. Some would rather ask, "Do I have to read a book?". If we can get them the right book, we can hook them on reading.

Our school is a grade 3-5 elementary school in a coastal county that was struck by Hurricane Irene.

Many of our students and families lost belongings and homes during and after the hurricane. Our media center took in a good bit of water, but thanks to early preparation, the heavy rains and flooding did not damage any of our books. We have some warped shelves and a few stains in the carpeting, but the books were unharmed. We were open for business as soon as school resumed! And business has been great ever since, especially since our building is housing an extra grade level while the flooded middle school is repaired. Our students love checking out books, and we hope to foster a love of reading in them that will last a lifetime.

My Project

We have high circulation statistics, meaning our students check out a lot of books. But are they reading the books they check out? It can be hard to tell. Recently, I was able to add a set of graphic novels to our collection, from the proceeds of our book fair. It has become one of the most popular and highly circulated sets in the media center! Students now want to talk about what they've read, and they are getting classmates interested in reading the same books. Graphic novels possess all the elements of a regular book, but they grab the reader with vivid graphics. They are a great way to get reluctant readers hooked on books. Graphic novels do not appear intimidating. They offer illustrations and limited words per page, yet the titles we order are still within the reading levels of our students. Once a student feels the success of finishing and understanding these graphic novels, they gain the confidence to move on to regular chapter books and nonfiction works.

I remember being very reluctant to order graphic novels many years ago.

I thought they were comic books with little to no literary value. Boy was I wrong! Graphic novels cover all genres of literature: fiction, nonfiction, historical fiction, biographies, fantasy, etc. They offer a fun and approachable path to reading. Students continue to beg for more, and once you hear a former "non-reading" student ask for more books, you know that you must find a way to get more books for them.
