The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a vibrant, eclectic area full of history, hospitality, and of my favorite - awesome children! My classroom is home to boys and girls of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Being located so close to different military bases, I have the privilege to work with military families who are being stationed here for the time being.
The most important thing about about my students is that they are so in love with learning and are always so excited about new activities I have planned for them.
You can't teach enthusiasm, and boy are they full of it! I work hard to keep them engaged and offer chances for them to work alone, with peers, or in small groups with me.
My Project
I give my students several chances throughout the day to immerse themselves in reading. With a literature-rich environment, I am hoping to instill the love of reading in every child that I teach. One way that my students participate in literacy is through a listening center. Students are able to choose through a variety of texts, most of which that are above grade-level, to enjoy by themselves, and listen to them as many times as they would like. After listening, students have the opportunity to take a comprehension test through Accelerated Reader on a book they may otherwise have never been able if they are not reading at that specific reading level.
The best way to enjoy a good book is in a comfy chair.
While my classroom may be too small for recliners, these pillows will offer my students the ability to curl up with a good book and listen to it for increased comprehension of higher-level texts. The individual cd players will allow my students to have access to their own equipment and they will not have to wait for a peer to finish before starting their book. The alternative seating and independent listening center materials will create an atmosphere of calm and quiet so that all students can be successful, no matter what literacy activity they may be participating in.
