This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our high school, Earth Science is a hands-on, interactive class for sophomores. Our school is comprised of predominately students from the Dominican Republic who have had little experience traveling outside of New York City or their home countries.
The goal of Earth Science at this school is to introduce our students to natural experiences outside of New York City. Throughout the year, we take two important trips to natural settings surrounding the city. One trip is a 4 mile hike in Harriman State Park and the other trip is to the Pelham Bay Park where we explore ocean environments. During these trips we discuss a variety of geologic processes, topographic maps, and vegetation.
Topography and maps are an important part of the curriculum that are hard to understand without taking a trip and using a topographic map of that specific area. It is hard to understand topics such as gradient, slope, distance, elevation, topographic interval and profile without the use of a handheld GPS unit. If this project gets funded it will enable us to purchase 4 GPS units for use not only on these trips, but on small trips around the school. The use of technology will help to engage students as they experience the outdoors and will solidify difficult concepts in their minds. You can help to foster a love of the outdoors and help students succeed in understanding abstract concepts.
