it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember your history classes? For many, the thought of history evokes dry lectures and textbook readings about chronology and irrelevant events. ("Bueller?") For my sixth graders, however, studying history means interviewing peers to create oral histories, conducting historical research to create museum exhibits, and crafting documentaries and TED Talks.
In my sixth grade history classroom, I try to bring ancient history to life through project-based learning, collaboration, and technology.
I teach 120 brilliant, resilient, and thoughtful students of color, many of whom are impacted by trauma. By teaching them to develop their critical reading, writing, and thinking skills, I hope to help them better understand historical inequities in order to fight for social justice.
My Project
Do you have a "comfort series?" A book series that you return to time and time again because re-reading it gives you so much pleasure? For my sixth graders, this year has been a year of series obsession. When students find a book or author that they enjoy, they want to read everything in that collection. I've seen several reluctant readers turned super-fans through the discovery of series like Death Note, 5 Worlds, Amulet and many more.
With this project, I am hoping to build upon my students' series obsession by investing in new copies of some of our most popular titles (which have started to disappear over the years) as well as some titles in similar series that I am sure they will love.
With the next books in the Dog Man, Attack on Titan, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Babysitter's Club series, Dork Diaries, and Investigators series, students who have already finished every book in my library multiple times will be able to find out what happens next to their favorite characters. With new series like Cells at Work, Klawde, and Stick Dog, students will find another series fix to keep them hooked on reading.
This time of year often becomes a "reading slump," as students claim that they have already read all the books in my class library that are of interest of them. With this new influx of books, they will have no choice but to find a title or author that they love!
