My Students
"Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain." The words of Carl Jung ring true in my classroom. Students often have difficulty understanding math concepts until they are able to manipulate concrete objects. Touch leads to discovery and excitement!
My students love learning.
They come to school each day ready to tackle projects and ideas. But nearly all of them do not have the advantage of an enriching home environment. Their homes are often void of books, pencils, crayons and other school tools.
Most of my students do not speak English at home, but their parents are eager for them to become fluent. Our classroom provides a place where they can talk to each other and become comfortable with their second language.
Our interior (no windows) classroom is painted to look like a sunny beach, which is a place most of my students have never been. The room is full of books, materials and joy.
My little ones are extremely active and need to constantly move, touch and talk. I provide many opportunities for them to do this during the school day.
These children are digital natives, but live in places where technology is simply not found. We don't have an abundance of tech in the classroom either, but we maximize what we do have!
My Project
Math concepts are often abstract and complicated for little ones to understand. For example, imagine trying to explain place value to a 6 or 7 year old using only words. Now imagine trying to explain place value to that same child, remembering that they are just learning English! And I bet some of you are wondering what place value is!
The math manipulatives requested in this project will help my students to take math concepts from the abstract to the concrete. They need to touch and move objects to understand and form big ideas. Math is not difficult, but it is often confusing. Manipulatives help students to reduce that confusion and maximize their ability to think out loud.
Hands-on math materials like place value blocks, counters in fun shapes and unifix cubes bring excitement and fun to math lessons at the same time they bring a depth of understanding to otherwise complicated concepts.
Active students need to touch in order to learn.
They cannot simply fill out worksheets and end up with a deep conceptual understanding of math objectives. The availability of an abundance of hands-on materials in our classroom will help my students to develop fluency with math ideas and enable them to have fun at the same time. These concepts will remain clear to them throughout their lives because of this project. Thank you for considering it!
