Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our small school is located in New York. We are a housed within a campus of many small schools. We serve students primarily from the surrounding neighborhood, and our students represent a multiculturally diverse and disadvantaged urban population.

All of our students are recent immigrants to the United States and therefore face an up-hill struggle not only to learn the subject matter, but also to acclimate to a new culture and language.

To make the concepts associated with science less complex and abstract, we use biotechnology projects to engage and enrich the learning experience. English Language Learners learn best by doing. Biotechnology appeals to these students because it provides many hands-on experiences. As they progress through the course, students learn how to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. They also develop critical thinking and analytical skills. All of these life skills will serve our students well in college. Biotechnology may also open the door to career opportunities beyond college.

My Project

Biotechnology is an ever-growing field, but unfortunately, it's very expensive. We were granted a complete biotechnology lab through very generous donations from DonorsChoose several years ago, but the chemical reagents, restriction enzymes and PCR primers, and other consumables must be purchased every year to provide the incoming students with the same experiences and to maintain the program. My students need 2 Protein Profiler kits to learn about how different amino acid sequences leads to biodiversity and speciation. In order to continue providing my students with biotechnology experiences, we need to replace the exhausted kits that are the backbone of our laboratory activities. Your donations will help us keep biotechnology in our curriculum. We cannot replace these supplies without your help.

We need your support to make it happen.

Help us to provide learning experiences and opportunities for those most in need. Help us to open doors. Thank you for supporting science education in our public schools.
