This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine a library that is so crucial to the very survival of the school, that it becomes the ultimate sacred space for teenage rejuvenation and inspiration during the day where students can breathe and dance with words! I aspire to create such an environment and I need your help!
As the librarian of a huge metropolitan high school in California, I see all sorts of students throughout the day.
Some are already passionately in love with reading and are always clutching a book everywhere they go. Others only enter when they are forced to and are obviously uncomfortable and/or experience profound disdain. Some would very much relish the opportunity to read but find the task so onerous and challenging that they have given up. And finally, there are some, my very favorites, who don't realize that they would devour books with glee if someone were to show them the right book. I am hoping you will help me do just that!
My Project
In order to accommodate the medley of students who inhabit our school, I must be able to shelve a variety of books in sundry genres, reading levels, and interest topics. I can't wait to process these books and get them into the hands of the students. I will display them on our NEW BOOKS rack and eagerly watch their consumption with ecstasy. Some of the books will fly off the shelves without any urging---they are the books in series the students are already gobbling up and books by beloved authors. And some of the books are titles that I know reluctant readers will enjoy. And still others are compelling stories that I look forward to introducing to my groupie readers so they may add yet another title to their literary repertoire.
If you can provide me the books, I can create a space that will appeal to the students, nurture them, inspire them, challenge them, and even heal them.
The more our students read for pleasure, the stronger their reading skills will become.
And the best way to coax students to read is to offer accessible and compelling novels that delight them. With your help, I will be able to keep my students intellectually fed all year long. Once they fall in love with reading, I will be able to stimulate their literary appetite throughout their high school career. And hopefully, they will continue this throughout their lives. Thank you so much!
