This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the biggest struggles we currently face in our classroom is ensuring that all students have material they can access and be successful with. Students need to be engaged with the material they are presented with at school in order to truly thrive.

Our school is located in a largely immigrant, low-income community.

We are a public K-6 school serving roughly 600 students. Nearly 80% of our students are English learners and 100% qualify for free/reduced rate lunch (low-income indicator). Our amazing students are eager to be the best they can be.

My Project

With these resources, struggling students will be able to be successful readers. Our class library is in need of a wider range of books in the late 1st grade reading level. Advanced readers who are capable of reading chapter books have plenty of options, but we need to engage struggling readers with material at their level. We are requesting a variety of books at a late 1st grade reading level, including fiction and nonfiction reading. Our project includes both fiction and nonfiction topics to engage a broader range of student interest. Although our class is a 3rd grade classroom, our class had nearly half of students reading at a 1st grade level at the beginning of the year. Although students are working hard and some have moved into an early 2nd grade reading level, many students are still struggling as they read at least 2 grade levels below their target.

We are asking for your support to equip our classroom with materials that will engage our learners, particularly struggling readers.

Many students have already begun to feel different because reading is challenging for them, but it is my goal to ensure that ALL students in our class have the support to be successful. Please consider helping our classroom.
