I started sewing when I was eight years old. It was encouraging for me to create something that I could then use and wear every day. I'm hoping that my students will feel the same. When my students ask me about my clothes and I tell them I made them, they are amazed and always say the same thing, "I wish I could sew." Well, I thought I'd give them the chance to learn.
Sewing can be beneficial to a student building and growing their self confidence.
Not to mention the physical benefits of developing the muscles necessary for fine motor control. My hope is that students can have a creative outlet that is constructive as well as find a real world application for the math we'll be using. Knowing how to sew is a useful skill that can be an outlet for a lot of students and support them for the rest of their lives.
