This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Geometry is a notoriously difficult subject for students to grasp (and find purpose in)! This year I am teaching five ICT and ENL classes (including newcomer immigrants), and want to find ways to differentiate our geometry lessons to be more approachable to these students who face extra academic challenges, while also making the lessons fun and hands-on. I want to help some of my most at-risk students find connections to the curriculum and feel as though they are able to be successful during the lessons.
This project includes some interactive tools that will help with creating meaningful, creative, applicable lesson activities that will make mathematics more accessible to my students with special needs, and my ENL classes.
This project is to fund a set of compasses for constructions and geometric drawing; a class set of dry erase boards for non-permanent problem solving (to help students embrace making mistakes as part of the learning process); and Play-Doh for modeling geometric figures to help create visuals to apply their thinking to.
I am hopeful that as this project gets funded, I can use these materials to help bring joy to our high school math class in ways that could change my students' perception of math and learning for years to come. Thank you in advance for any support you can provide in making this vision come true.
