My Project

In third grade, students need to be able to read, understand text structure, and write supporting their opinions using text evidence from the book or sometimes just create a good story. When kids begin to develop their writing skills they need to have a large schema from which to pull their ideas.

Reading a variety of picture books that introduce students to how others live, work, or have overcome challenges, allows students to see what the world is like outside of their small rural community.

It allows kids to think outside of the box and not only become writers but also become problem solvers. From reading engaging stories to using colorful highlighters, all of this helps students notice the subtle differences in writing.

Reading picture books and Scholastic News will allow my students to see the world in different ways, which builds on their schema and helps them to become better writers.

I plan for my students to read interesting text whether it comes from books or magazines. I need them engaged and ready to not only answer questions about what they have read but also construct their own meaning from the story. By using fun tools, and great stories they will be able to understand what they are reading and in turn, create their own stories.
