This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My scholars started a journey into a new program at our middle school as the first group of the Medical and Health Careers magnet. 89% of the student population is Latino/Hispanic with 100% participating in Free and Reduced lunch program.

Our program is meeting the needs of the diverse learner and encouraging students of color to view representation within disciplines such as legal, medical, or entrepreneurial.

Our school is a college going and preparedness culture and invites our scholars to visit museums and colleges.

My Project

Students of color are facing a challenging time right now and the value of representation is very important in disciplines such as legal, medical, and educational are keys to their success. As remote learning continues to be a challenge, the need to move away from the screen and read an actual novel is important to ensure that this skill is still vitally important in the 21st century. Reading allows for collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking skills, and providing this novel will instill all facets of this important skill set. The goal for the novel Just Mercy is to help students make an authentic, real world connection that exemplifies the historical challenges within the US Constitution and the founding principles of the founding fathers.
