This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in the southwestern part of Houston and serves kids from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. We are a neighborhood school and a community in the truest sense of the word. We work very closely with our kids and their families to put them on the path to success. We are a diverse place in many ways and I am very fortunate to teach such a wonderful group of kids.

We know that a picture is worth a thousand words and I have seen my students engaged with graphic novels in the past and I am looking to expand my classroom library with some excellent materials.

Whether a student is connecting with a great historical story and learning the English language along the way or grappling with the complexities of how the US government operates, I know these materials will make a big difference in my class.

My Project

I have used graphic novels in my class before and I think they have been very beneficial. Last year, I used the story of Laika, the Russian dog who was the first to travel into space, and the kids loved it. The graphic novel did a great job of showing them what the space race was like from the other side and what it was like living in the Soviet Union in the 1950's while telling the story of a sweet dog that just happened to find her way into the pages of history.

Stories like that stay with students regardless of where they are at academically and I know that the graphic novels I am looking to implement can make the same difference in engaging my students.
