My Students

I aim to help my students own the skills and confidence to realize their dreams.

I want them to dream big. The elementary school I work in has about 400 students, most of whom come from low income families of various backgrounds.

I teach in a Spanish bilingual classroom where more than 90% of students are English Learners. Some of my students are also not proficient in Spanish. They often come with low reading and writing scores in Spanish and English. Many of the students are not yet independent thinkers and have difficulty articulating their thoughts both orally and in writing. Often they lack confidence to problem solve and defend their thinking in both languages. Additionally, they are often intimidated by English. My goal is to show them all they can do in both languages.

My Project

One of our science units involved learning about inheritance and traits in wolves. Another of our units involves learning about how animals adapt to habitats.

In order to support the science instruction and give my students background knowledge that they can use to access the scientific investigations, I would like to add some books to our classroom library about habitats and wolves.

The students will be able to read these books during Reading Workshop. They will take notes on what they learn and work on a science research topic of their choice at the end of the year. The more books we have about science topics, the easier it will be to get students interested in science.
