This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many people think that middle schoolers are too old to play; however, important social learning and bonding come through playing games together.

I teach 8th grade English and 6th grade advisory at a public middle school in a large urban school district.

Our school is located in a neighborhood with some of the highest rates of poverty in the city. Representing diverse backgrounds, my students are all young people of color who come from from low income families.

My Project

My sixth grade advisory students are new to our school this year, and we will remain as a unit throughout their three middle school years. In advisory, students meet daily to set academic and personal goals, discuss issues like bullying and relationships, celebrate achievements, and develop strategies to cope with the stresses and challenges of adolescence. As they adapt to a new school, it is paramount that they build strong, supportive, and positive relationships with each other. With games such as Connect Four, Monopoly, and Scrabble they will be able to bond and build friendships as well as learn about collaboration, problem-solving, and strategy.

The benefits of play on a child's socio-emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, stress management, and academic learning are well documented.

With your support, my students will learn valuable skills as well as build lasting relationships that will support them through their middle school years and beyond.
