This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This is my 10th year teaching. This year I am teaching AP Biology, Honors Biology, CP Biology, and CP Environmental Science. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness Activities and Crafts Club and Garden Club. My Garden Club's goals are to help beautify campus, clean up our school community garden after school once a month, and set up other garden spaces on campus. The students also help harvest vegetables and plant seasonal crops. We recently got some large flower pots donated to our club. We also have another raised garden bed for vegetables that we got donated as well. One of the problems we are running into is access to water. Last year we had some access to a water source and we were able to set up a hose. This year the hook up has been shut off and is not consistent. We are hoping it will be fixed soon but in the meantime we need a way to water our 3 garden beds that are currently set up and the other ones that we want to set up as well.
Our Garden Club needs various large and small terracotta watering pots so the students can grow their vegetables and flowers.
The watering ollas are a great alternative when we don't have consistent access to a hose. We received two large ollas from another project to try them out and they work very well for the size of our raised garden beds. The students would bury the watering ollas in our raised garden beds and refill them every 1-2 weeks. This will allow our flowers and vegetables to stay watered. Last week we harvested some bell peppers and trimmed back some of our flowers and made bouquets. We can't wait to do more!
