My Students
Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. Many also come from military families. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100 percent of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need, whether it is an academic or a personal need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to extend our STREAM clubs.
My Project
Many students deal with separation anxiety, which makes if difficult for them to focus and want to be at school. There is a special group of students that need extra consideration.
Imagine not knowing where your parent is, if they are in danger, and when they will be back.
In addition, military families face financial issues, and the parent that is at home is stressed trying to take care of the family. This all leads to a lot of issues for the children. With the coverage in the news, students whose parents are in areas of conflict may see or hear things that can be very difficult for them, knowing their parent is there.
This project is also about teaching students tolerance. There are many different ethnic groups in our school and community. With the national and world issues, sometimes those issues affect how students treat each other, and those whose parents are in the military. These materials can be used in the classroom to help other students understand.
My project will provide materials for the children of military parents to use in small group, and if appropriate share with their families. The books can also be shared with the child's classes so that the classmates better understand what the child is going through.
The journals will be used for the students to write about what they are doing to share with the parent when they come back, journal about their feelings, or draw. I have found this very useful for students who are dealing with deployed parents. I cannot bring a child's parent back home to them, or make all the issues go away. I can be there to provide information and support to assist them in dealing with the situation. Thank you for your help!
