Goldilocks and the Six Chairs

My students need small chairs so they can sit comfortably while reading in the library.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Similar to Goldilocks, my students struggle to find a chair that is "just right" for them in the library. All of the chairs are too big! With legs dangling high above the floor, there is fidgeting, squirming and ultimately distraction from the books they would really like to immerse themselves in.

The kindergarten to second grade students in this public elementary school in Illinois are vibrant and enthusiastic arriving at the library once a week to develop skills, resources and tools for using and enjoying the library.

In addition to the mandated curriculum, together the students blend their diverse and multi-cultural backgrounds offering priceless life lessons simply by befriending and learning from and with each other. Furthermore, the students have a wide array of physical, emotional and academic abilities. With 14 unique languages spoken, all are welcomed and treasured as part of the student body and challenged to strive for their fullest achievements.

My Project

While small chairs would suffice the needs of my students; child-sized rocking chairs will have a much larger impact on their successes in the library. Of course, the small size will allow for simple comfort and a sense of belonging in the room. However, there is an added benefit to the rocking chairs. The gentle motion will benefit not only the students diagnosed with attention disorders, but also the autistic children that need the repetition in movement to help center their attention. Further, the library assignments revolve around activity centers where the children assemble in groups of five or six to work on a specific task. Six rocking chairs can easily be arranged into a center, a circle, small groups or pairs. This will allow for versatility in seating needs as they arise.

While seating may not seem as glamorous as the bells and whistles that come with modern technology, the beauty of this project comes in the simplicity of providing a child a place to sit where they can be comfortable and feel welcome to enjoy the magic of the library.

Like Goldilocks, many students search high and low, experiencing difficulty in finding a spot that is "just right." You can help our students rest in the perfect chair freeing their imaginations from the bounds of their seats.
