This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words has been a challenge this year for all of my English Language Learners. More than half of my class are English Language Learners this year and I am trying to figure out new fun ways to build their Phonemic Awareness.
The students in my room are beating the odds each and every day.
These children are raised in a low-income community and do not receive many of the resources they need and deserve at home. My school is located in a predominately Hispanic community. Over 80% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The families in the community are incredibly supportive of their child's education. With class sizes growing, students are getting less one on one time with the teacher. My vow to my students is that I will try everything and anything I can to make learning fun for them. My kindergrtners will continue to build their phonemic awareness, learn to read and one day attend college!
My Project
One of the biggest challenges for my students this year is the lack of manipulative's and phonemic games in our classroom. My students are eager learners and this phonemic awareness kit consisting of Match A Sound! Phonemic Awareness Boxes will allow them to enjoy and have fun learning how to listen and manipulate sounds. Phonemic awareness is the foundation for reading and I want my kindergartners to successful readers. This kit will be used daily in:
1. Workstation Groups
2. Intervention Groups
3. Rhyming, Beginning, Ending Sound Stations
My students deserve the fighting chance to beat the odds of literacy in low-income areas.
The discouraging outlook for low-performing students is even reflected in the high incidence of reading difficulties among the prison population. Some states even estimate future prison populations based on third-grade reading scores. My students will not become another statistic. They will become the bright future of our world. I want my students to be successful but they need Phonemic Awareness!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
